Bannann ak Sós “Vyann” (Plantains with Plantbased Meat Sauce)

Updated: Dec 27, 2022

It's true, the less I eat meat, the less I crave meat substitutes. That being said, meat substitutes like the Beyond Meatballs are the perfect vegan option when I'm craving traditional Haitian meals like Bannann ak Sós.

Here's a simple recipe for just that below:

Serving Size: 2 people

Ingredients:

Sos Vyann

  • 1 pack of beyond meatballs (or preferred plantbased meat)

  • 2 Green onions

  • 1/2 Bell pepper

  • 4 leaves of Sage

  • 3 slices of lime

  • Roas tomato sauce (or preferred tomato paste)

  • Handful of Cherry Tomatoes

  • Better than Bouillon Organic Vegetable Broth

  • Expeller Pressed Safflower Oil

  • 2 cups of water

Bannann | Boiled Plantain

  • 2 yellow plantains (for a little sweetness) or green plantains (for more starchiness)

Directions:

Sos Vyann

  1. Add oil to frying pan (coat bottom)

  2. Cut up meatballs and sauté

  3. Add veggies to pan

  4. Add EPIS seasoning to veggies and meat

  5. Take out meat and set aside in bowl

  6. Add two spoonfuls of Rao's tomato sauce to pan of veggies (in place of tomato paste)

  7. Add two cups of water with 1 teaspoon of better than bouillon vegetable broth and mix everything together

  8. Let the mix simmer to reduce the water/ allow the sauce to thicken

  9. Add more seasoning if sauce is too watery or add more water if sauce is too salty

  10. Once the sauce has reduced, let it sit for 5 minutes and then mix in the beyond meatballs (they soak up liquid so be mindful!)

Bannann | Boiled Plantain

  1. Wash, peel, and cut the plantain in half

  2. Add water to a medium pot and boil at medium heat

  3. Add plantain to pot until it is fully cooked through (fork smoothly goes into it)

Serve

  1. Slice plantain on plate

  2. Pour meat sauce over plantains

  3. Optional* add sliced avocado on side
